Use this template at the start of any new product initiative. It forces clarity on the problem, the user, and what "done" looks like before engineering starts.
When to use it
- Kicking off a new feature or product line
- Aligning product and engineering on scope
- Preparing for a stakeholder review
Sections
- Problem — What pain are we solving, and for whom?
- Users — Primary and secondary personas
- Success criteria — Measurable outcomes, not feature lists
- Constraints — Timeline, compliance, technical boundaries
- Non-goals — What we are explicitly not doing
Tips
Keep each section to a few sentences. If you cannot fill a section in five minutes, you probably need more discovery before building.
Download the markdown file and duplicate it for each new initiative.
